The difference this gift makes to families and communities is wheelie significant.
Walking is the primary mode of transportation for many people in the developing world. Everyday tasks can quickly become a struggle against time, fatigue and distance. Collecting water, going to school or more worryingly, getting someone ill to a health clinic is far more challenging on foot. For every ten miles travelled, a bicycle saves three hours and gives individual five times more carrying capacity.
Gift in action
Orphaned brothers Jean Nshimirimana (17) and Clovis Kwizerimana (14) have bought a bicycle thanks to Concern. They use the bike to transport and sell water collected from the lake two kilometres away in two borrowed jerry cans. Jean and Clovis also spend part of what they earn on cultivating a small plot of land close to their home. They harvest beans, maize, sunflower seeds, cassava and sweet potatoes.
This gift goes towards our Livelihoods programme.
